Protecting Your Valuables with Home Safes

Different types, different benefits

Most people who are shopping for gun safes also have other items such as jewelry, business documents, or computer disks that could use additional protection. For that reason, it's wise to consider all available options when choosing a home safe. In addition to gun safes, these are some of the other types of home safes that can be used to safeguard your valuables.

Wall Safes

One of the primary advantages of a built-in wall safe is concealment. Wall safes are often hidden behind mirrors, paintings, or pieces of furniture. They're relatively inexpensive and, depending on the design, can accommodate both handguns and rifles. Some models feature an anti-pry design for extra protection in the event that thieves are able to locate the safe.

In Floor Safes

Concealment is also one of the benefits of choosing an in floor safe. This type of safe is usually best for smaller valuables, since lifting heavier objects that have been placed into the safe can be inconvenient. In floor safes are usually covered by decorative rugs or furniture.

Free Standing Safes

Free standing safes are general safes that can be located in any discreet place within the home, such as a closet or safe room. Size and weight can vary widely, but it's best to choose a free standing safe that is heavy enough to prevent intruders from simply taking it with them. Free standing safes may be bolted to a floor or wall to enhance security.

Home Safe Features

Features to consider when purchasing a home safe include advanced locking systems (see our Gun Safe Lock Systems article for more information) and fire-, water-, and impact-resistance. Many home safes offer 30 minutes of fire protection, which typically means that the safe will maintain an internal temperature of 350 degrees F for 30 minutes in heat of 1200 degrees F. For comparison, a typical house fire burns for 27 minutes at 1100 degrees F. If you need to protect computer disks, magnetic tape, or other items that are more sensitive than paper, look for a fire resistant safe that will maintain a 150 degrees F temperature for 30 minutes or more.
